Running way from God – returning to God – questioning God – angry with God.
In our first Sunday series of 2021, we will be going on a journey through the book of Jonah. The book of Jonah is a great example of the call to return to God. God asked Jonah to go and call for the people of Nineveh to repent. Jonah didn’t want to do this, probably thinking that they should get what they deserved, a huge pagan city well-known for ungodly and wicked ways. He decided to head in the opposite direction, so demonstrating that he was himself running away from God.
After well-known adventures he eventually went to Nineveh and delivered God’s message. To his dismay, from the humblest to the King himself, the people of Nineveh repented and returned to God.
Jonah was not happy and vented his spleen at God, telling Him where He was going wrong. Jonah showed himself as the one who needed to return to God.
